You Will Never Start A Diet Again

The framework behind every DEBs WAY client

I’ve been asked many times what makes my clients succeed within 8 weeks to develop a sustainable lifestyle that they love and that fits each of them.

The real question behind that question is: why do most of us keep starting over? We diet, we lose weight, we gain it back. We try something new, it works for a bit, then life happens and we’re back where we started.

That was me too. When I was 51 I was around 80kg. I was eating “healthy.” But the scale was up every year, I kept getting out of breath after a set of stairs, buying bigger clothes each year, and wanting to disappear in every family photo.

After I lost 25kg (now 20kg steady for over 2 years), I figured out what really helped me and I developed the DEBs WAY methodology. Clear enough to help almost anybody, flexible enough for each client to make it her own way.

The base of DEBs WAY is the goals you have, which we formulate together based on what you’ve told me is important to you.

From there we work on a few tools: planning, making choices, and challenging pre-existing beliefs.

First you’ll learn about planning. I love this one, I call it the red thread (rode draad, Dutch expression). Life happens and we can’t expect things to go perfectly. Once you start planning, you feel liberated. Especially when it comes to food. You stop reacting to what’s happening, and you stop thinking about food all the time.

You’re always making choices, from small ones to big ones. Often you make choices automatically, without thinking them through. When you’re building a new lifestyle, it’s important to reflect on those choices and realign them with your goals.

Planning and making choices deliberately eventually bring you this feeling of freedom and being in charge. You’re no longer a victim of automatic habits or of whatever’s happening in the moment. Being in charge is fuel to keep you moving toward your goals.

I also help you by challenging your beliefs around your body, food, and movement. The general advice to eat a little less and move a little more was, on its own, already too much for me to follow. I didn’t know where to start, and paying someone to help me felt like defeat instead of what it really was: accepting that I wasn’t alone, and that I was able to change. I needed to believe before the results showed up to prove it was possible.

When you’re convinced that you can change, and that anything is possible, following a few structured guidelines isn’t that difficult anymore. Each step is adapted to your own possibilities, so it’s not hard to follow. We work slowly on your nutrition, your movement, and other parts of your wellbeing.

You’ll have established your rules, and the road will have railings to help you navigate it. These are your calorie budget, the macros it’s made of, how much movement you do daily or weekly, starting or keeping up strength training, and resting and managing stress like you mean it.
